Training weekend: queering 🏳️‍🌈 relationships

Last weekend, I completed the first weekend residential module of the Open & Polyamorous Relationships CPD—part of a pioneering training programme offered through Rainbow Relationships and led by experienced therapists Niki D and Alex Sanderson-Shortt. Held in Manchester, this CPD is the UK’s first in-depth, experiential therapist training dedicated to open and polyamorous relationships .

Setup

We stayed at a comfortable, stylish hotel near Canal Street, with the training taking place at the Proud Trust, nearby. Sessions ran from Friday morning through Sunday afternoon, with (optional) social gatherings in the evenings.

A rich mix of experiential learning and practical skills

Through group work, role-play, and reflective exercises, I deepened my understanding of polyamory, joyful sluttery, ethical non-monogamy, consent, jealousy, boundary setting, and communication skills tailored to clients in varied relational contexts.

Community and connection

Being among therapists—from seasoned practitioners to more recently qualified therapists—created a provoactive, challenging and supportive environment. I immediately felt part of a wider community committed to evolving ourselves and relationship therapy.

Highlights

  • Ethics-first facilitation. Leadership from Alex and Niki ensured that discussions around e.g. power dynamics, privilege, and diversity were well-attended, underpinned by a strong ethical framework.

  • Real-world scenarios. We engaged with complex case studies—triads, polycules, negotiated non-monogamy—and practiced navigating emotional landscapes that often arise in non-traditional setups.

  • Practical takeaway tools. From mapping relationships to recontracting relationships, I gained concrete frameworks I can use in practice.

For you?

This training is ideal for professionals who:

  • Have experience—or curiosity—in supporting clients exploring open or polyamorous living

  • Wish to develop competence, confidence, and skill in working with diverse relationship styles

  • Value a combination of experiential, peer, and reflective training

What’s next?

This weekend was one of two residential modules, and there is an optional online component including webinars, peer groups, and expert Q&As—to complete the full 76‑hour CPD.
